According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sony will invest 100 billion yen (about 6.5 billion yuan) in Nagasaki, Japan, to build a new semiconductor image sensor factory for smartphone cameras and other devices. It obviously promotes the development of camera module manufacturers.
Image sensors are widely used in digital cameras, photographic equipment, and industrial robots, and are known as "electronic eyes". Due to the spread of 5G and autonomous driving, as well as factory automation, the demand for image exchange will increase. Against this backdrop, the market for image sensors, which is expected to play an important role, will expand, and the demand for camera modules will also increase.
Soni's new plant is reportedly located near the existing plant in Nagasaki Prefecture. It will cover an area of 74,800 square meters and will mass-produce CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) image sensors for smartphones. Soni has four production sites in Japan that produce image sensors for smartphone cameras, with a monthly production capacity of about 100,000 (converted to 300 mm wafers). Soni said it would increase its production capacity to 130,000 sheets per month by March 2021.
The company has been promoting capacity and efficiency gains at existing plants, but as demand grows, it will increase capacity with new plants. The new factory will gradually expand its production capacity from 2021 onwards, eventually reaching a scale of tens of thousands of sheets per month. It is reported that in semiconductors, the structure of image sensors is complex, and the experience of conventional manufacturing is considered useful.
Currently, it has a 50% global market share in the field of image sensors. With South Korea's second-largest Samsung Electronics (20.5%) also investing, Soni hopes to increase its market share to 60% by building a new factory to leave Samsung behind. The above signs show that the arrival of the 5G era is promoting the development of camera module manufacturers.
